JFL Courses (Friday – Japanese as a Foreign Language)

KS class (Students who are 4 years old by March 1, 2017 and in grade 1 of a Canadian school system can be registered for 2017-2018 school year)

Children become familiar with Japanese sounds and simple characters through Japanese songs, crafts, and games. They learn words for colours, foods, animals, family members, the human body, seasons and vehicles. They learn to recognize words consisting of two to three Hiragana characters.

GS1 class (Beginner class for students in Grades 2 to 6 of a Canadian school system)

This class is for students with little or no pre-knowledge of Japanese. Students learn daily greetings and to talk about themselves using clear and natural pronunciation. This class covers common vocabulary and simple sentences as well as reading and writing Hiragana.

GS2 class (Students who have successfully completed GS1 or equivalent and are in Grades 2 to 6 in a Canadian school system)

Students review Hiragana and learn Katakana. Verbs and time words are taught to enable students to converse in every day situations. As well, students learn adjectives to describe to objects, places and locations.

GS3 class (Students who have successfully completed GS2 or equivalent and are in Grades 2 to 6 in a Canadian school system)

After reviewing Hiragana and Katakana, students start to learn Kanji or Chinese characters. Classes cover situational expressions used when shopping and telephoning. Students begin writing simple sentences.

Youth1 class (Beginner class for students in Grades 7 to 12 in a Canadian school system)

Students learn Hiragana and Katakana along with clear, natural pronunciation. Daily greetings, family members and introductions are covered. Students receive instruction in expressing themselves in everyday life and school situations. They also learn to describing things with adjectives.

Youth2 class (Students who have successfully completed Youth1 or equivalent and are in Grades 7 to 12 in a Canadian school system)

Topics covered include a review Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji as well as learning situational expressions and conversations such as shopping and school life. Students write letter using sentences and expressions they have learned.

Youth3 class (Students who have successfully completed Youth2 or equivalent and are in Grades 7 to 12 in a Canadian school system)

Students review Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. They also learn situational expression used when shopping and in school life. They write letters using the sentence structures they have learned. Students are also challenged with preparing and delivering a presentation.
